How to Install Windows XP Mode in Windows 7

1. Go to the Windows Virtual PC website, and do the first two steps for your 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 and language. (see screenshot below)
2. Afterwards, click on the Windows XP Mode download button in step 3 at that site. (see screenshot below)
3. Click on Continue for Windows validation. When validation is complete, click on Continue to start the download process. (see screenshots below)
4. Download and Install Windows XP Mode -
A) Click on Save, then save the WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe file to your desktop. (see screenshot below)

B) Double click on the downloaded WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe installation file to start installing it.
NOTE: The part of the name in red will vary for you depending on what language you selected (step 1).
C) Click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)
D) Click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)
E) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.
F) When Windows XP Mode is finished installing, click on the Finish button. (See screenshot below)

5. Download and Install Windows Windows Virtual PC -
A) At the Windows Virtual PC website, click on the Windows Virtual PC download button in step 3 at that site. (see screenshot below)
B) Click on Save, then save the Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB958559-x64.msu file to your desktop. (see screenshot below)
C) Double click on the downloaded Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB958559-x64.msu file to start installing it.
D) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.

E) Click on Yes. (see screenshot below)

F) Click on the I Accept button. (see screenshot below)
G) When it is finished, click on the Restart Now button. (see screenshot below)
WARNING: This will restart your computer immediately. Be sure to save and close anything that you have open first.
H) When the computer is finished restarting, continue on to step 6 below.
6. Download and Install Windows XP Mode Update -
NOTE: Enables Windows XP Mode for PCs without Hardware Assisted Virtualization Technology. For more information, visit the Frequently Asked Questions page. While the Windows XP Mode Update download may be optional for PCs with Hardware Assisted Virtualization Technology, it will not hurt anything to install it to be safe if you are not sure if you do or not.
A) At the Windows Virtual PC website, click on the Windows XP Mode Update download button in step 3 at that site. (see screenshot below)
B) Click on Save, then save the Windows6.1-KB8977206-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB8977206-x64.msu file to your desktop. (see screenshot below)
C) Double click on the downloaded Windows6.1-KB8977206-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB8977206-x64.msu file to start installing it.

D) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.

E) Click on Yes. (see screenshot below)
F) When it is finished, click on the Restart Now button. (see screenshot below)
WARNING: This will restart your computer immediately. Be sure to save and close anything that you have open first.

G) When the computer is finished restarting, continue on to step 7 below.
7. To Open and Run Windows XP Mode -
A) Open the Start Menu, then click on All Programs, expand the Windows Virtual PC folder, and double click on the Windows XP Mode shortcut. (see screenshot below)

8. Check the I accept box, then click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)
9. Type in a password and type it in again to confirm it, then click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: If you would like to be logged on automatically whenever you open Windows XP Mode (step 7), then check the Remember credentials box.
10. Select (dot) the Help protect my computer by turning on Automatic Updates now box, then click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)
11. Click on the Start Setup button. (see screenshot below)
12. You will now see this for a few moments while Windows XP Mode is being setup. (see screeshot below)
13. When setup is finished and you did not check the Remember credentials box in step 9 above, then you will need to enter your password entered and click on OK. If you did, then skip this and continue on to step 14. (see screenshot below)
14. The Windows XP Mode - Windows Virtual PC window will now open. You are now in Windows XP Mode. (see screenshot below)
15. Set Windows XP Mode Settings -
A) In the Windows XP Mode window, click on Tools (menu bar) and Settings. (see screenshot above)
B) In the left pane, select Close/Shut Down. (see screenshot below)
C) In the right pane, select (dot) Automatically close with the following action, then select Shut Down and click on OK. (see screenshot above)
16. To Close Windows XP Mode -
A) Click on the X in the upper right corner of the Windows XP Mode window like you would any other window in Windows 7. (see screenshot below step 18)
OR
B) In the Windows XP Mode window, click on Action (menu bar) and Close. (see screenshot below step 18)

17. Installing a Program in Virtual Windows XP -
NOTE: You would install a program in Virtual Windows XP just like you would in Windows 7 with the same access to everything in Windows 7. For example, hard drives, DVD drives, USB drives, Windows 7 folders and files, etc.....
A) After you have installed any program in the Windows XP Mode - Windows Virtual PC, you will notice that there will now be a shortcut to it also in the Windows 7 Start Menu. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: Double clicking on the shortcut in the Windows 7 Start Menu will open and run the program in Windows XP Mode. You can now move or copy this Windows XP Mode program shortcut where you like in Windows 7 for easy use.

Page navigation is need for all blogger because it can make navigation easy for your visitors. Previous script have some weakness :

Maximum posts 500
Have to read all JSON file if post so many make your blog slow
Need long loop to calculate all posts (no body know this if they not read the script)

Now all those problems can be solved, Insya Allah. The script is different with My Previous Modification Nummbered Page Navigation for blogger, the script based on my own idea and for style I used from Mohamed Rias

Add a search engine in the sidebar of your blogger blog. This searches all the posts on your blog, and displays them by latest posts first. Inside the search bar you will find the text "Search this Site", this can easily be changed to any text you desire. Such as "Search my Site", "Search", "Type and Hit Enter", etc. Just simply replace the code. You can also change the text "Go" on the button to something like "Search", "Find", etc.

GoogleCode.com is one of the best site that help bloggers to host their JS (Javascripts) files for free. This article explains about how to upload the JS files and using it to your blogger templates.

1. Sign in to your google account. I recommend with your gmail.com account. If you don't have one, please create it first.

2. Find googlecode.com in your search engine

3. choose the googlecode's project hosting link

4. Create A New Project by click the new project link

5. Fill all the form such as: project name, licences, labels and etc. And, Please choose any license. (Sorry, I don't give any specific information about every single license for you. If you want to know it, please find it in search engine by yourself). The form is just like the screen shot below :

6. After you push the "Creating Project" button, you will be directed to the list page. Then click the Download Tabs. Please see the screen shot below.

7. After click it. You will see the page below. Then, please click the button "New Download".

Even though it said new download, actually, that link is for upload the JS files. So, after you click it, then you can upload your JS files into the googlecode.com.

8. Fill the form such as summary, and label, and then Click Browse. Upload all your files. Please see below

9. After uploading, you will be given links. Put on your mouse pointer on the link. then copy its link location. Please see the screen shot below.

10. Great, you get the link location. How to use it ...?

Cara Kedua

Dari Dashboard akun blogger kamu, pilih Tata Letak - Edit HTML.

Paste script Rolling Widget tadi di bawah kode </head>, atau antara </head> dan <body>.

Manfaat Meta Tag Bagi Sebuah Situs

Menyambung tulisan sebelumnya tentang Google Webmaster Tools, kali ini sedikit akan dijelaskan mengenai meta tag (soalnya sudah terlanjur janji, kalo gak ditepati kan dosa, hehe...).
Bagi para blogger pemula (seperti aku yang baru lima bulan jadi blogger, hehe...), biasanya belum mengenal meta tag ini, apalagi hampir setiap template blog yang ada tidak mencantumkan meta tag ke dalam script HTML-nya. Padahal meta tag ini sangat membantu mesin pencari (search engine)untuk melacak (merayapi) situs kita, karena fungsi utama dari meta tag ini adalah untuk memberikan semacam ringkasan mengenai sebuah situs kepada search engine sehingga search engine tersebut bisa mengetahui keberadaan suatu situs hanya dengan membaca ringkasannya (tanpa harus membaca seluruh entry data-nya). Dan konon, dengan menambahkan meta tag ini dapat mendongkrak popularitas situs kita karena search engine dapat dengan mudah untuk mengindeks situs kita itu (Benar apa tidak, blum tauk tuh. Maklum orang baru, hehe...).
Ada tiga meta tag yang wajib bin kudu ada di dalam sebuah situs, yaitu :

Robots, berfungsi untuk memberitahu search engine agar tidak tidak membaca halaman-halaman tertentu di situs kita, seperti halaman yang hanya khusus untuk anggota.
Description (keterangan), berfungsi untuk memberitahu search engineagar melacak situs kita melalui keterangan ini tanpa harus membaca seluruh isi kontennya.
Keywords (kata kunci), berfungsi untuk memberitahu search engine agar melacak situs kita melalui kata kunci-nya saja tanpa harus membaca seluruh entry data-nya.

Nah, bagaimana membuat meta tag ini? Berikut adalah contoh meta tag yang dapat kamu tiru :

Jika konten anggota tidak ingin diindeks maka ganti FOLLOW-nya dengan NOFOLLOW. Dan jika situs kamu tidak ingin diindeks, ganticontent-nya dengan NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW, sehinga search engine tidak akan bisa mencari/merayapinya. Tapi gak usah takut, situs kamu masih bisa dibuka jika kamu atau teman kamu menuliskan URL-nya.
Keterangan situs diisi sesuai dengan konten situs, misalnya seperti :
“Blog ini merupakan kumpulan tulisan seputar dunia sastra, baik berupa puisi, cerpen, cerbung dan artikel lainnya seputar sastra.”
Deskripsi atau keterangan situs ini sebaiknya lengkap dan tidak harus sama dengan deskripsi judul web/blog, yang biasanya singkat.
Kata kunci situs diisi sesuai dengan deskripsi situs tadi, misalnya :
“sastra, cerpen, cerpen lucu, cerbung, cerbung serem, puisi, puisi cinta, puisi supi, artikel sastra.”
Perhatikan kata yang diulang! Itu akan memudahkan search engine untuk mencari melalui kata kunci tersebut. Jadi jika orang mencari secara lebih spesifik, misalnya cerpen lucu, maka search engine akan langsung menunjuk ke situs kita. Tapi ingat, jangan mengulang kata lebih dari 3 kali, soalnya bisa-bisa dianggap spam oleh search engine.
Author diisi dengan si pembuat situs, sehingga jika nama ini dicari melalui search engine maka akan muncul pula situs yang dibuatnya.

Nah, sudah jelas kan? Lalu bagaimana cara meletakkan meta tag itu? Ya, seperti biasa (aku diam tak bicara, kate bang Iwan) :

Login dulu ke blogger kamu.
Dari halaman dashboard, pilih Tata Letak, pilih Edit HTML.
Kopikan script meta tag tadi (setelah diedit sesuai situs kamu).
Tempelkan di bawah <head> (letaknya ada pada script paling atas), atau jika kamu sudah membuat blog titel berjalan pada tab page kamu bisa meletakkannya di bawah script untuk shorcut icon (favicon).
Save setelah menambahkan meta tag tersebut.

Fitur Blogger untuk menampilakan avatar (foto) komentator blog kita. Hanya dapat dinikmati oleh blogger yang masih memakai template klasik dari blogger.com. Tapi kenyataanya sangat sedikit blog yang memakai template klasik dari blogger.com karena memang tampilan kurang menarik. Dengan mendownload template baru, yang non standart dari blogger.com anda tidak akan mendapatkan fiturtersebut, akan tetapi kini dengan sedikit mengedit templatenya anda juga bisa menikmati fitur ini. Bagaimana sob? anda ingin mencobanya kan? untuk itu bacalah hal-hal dibawah...

Login ke Blogger. Cek dulu di Settings – Comments kemudian periksa di samping “ Show profile images on comments? “ pilihanya pada “ Yes” dan simpan.
Kemudian masuk ke Tata Letak.
Kemudian pilih Edit HTML
Beri tanda centang pada Expand Template Widget
Cari Kode <dl id='comments-block'> dan jika tidak ketemu, cari kode berikut ini <div id='comments-block'>
Setelah kode di atas ketemu kemudian ganti dengan kode berikut ini.

Enable POP in your Gmail account.
Open Outlook or Outlook Express.

Notice the file TSLIC.edb. Rename it to tslic.old

In every client computer, remove the CAL TS registry keys, located at:

Restart your server.

1. nLite allows you to customize your installation of Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows 2003. You can integrate service packs and hotfixes from Microsoft directly into your windows distribution files without having to re-download and install them every time you need to re-install windows.

2. There is also the option to remove unwanted components from within windows. Many applications are automatically included every time windows is installed. Not every person needs or even wants all of these applications which Microsoft considers to be necessary. By removing these unwanted components you can free up space within your setup and ultimately save space on your hard drive after installation.

3. nLite also provides a way to customize your installation by allowing numerous tweaks to the way windows looks and operates after it has been installed. You can even bypass Microsoft's bulky unattended setup instructions and do it the easy way. The nLite way!

Requirements

You must be running any 32 or 64 bit version of Windows. Windows 9x not supported.
nLite needs .NET Framework 2.0 to be installed. If it is not you will be asked to do so uppon installer startup
Alternatively you can download nuhi's Alternative Runtimes for nLite. These can be found on the Download page, however few people reported issues with it so if you get error popup on nLite startup then use full framework.
Also, you need to have your Windows installation CD for the original Windows installation files

When installing .NET Framework 2.0 you will see this screen:

Click on 'Next' to proceed with the installation

After .NET Framework is installed we are ready to begin

Part 1

Create a folder somewhere on your hard drive to copy the windows source files into
I called mine 'XP_Source' but you can use whatever name you prefer. Just make sure there is adequate space on your hard drive to hold the files
Copy the full content from the distribution cd into this folder
Start nLite

- Welcome screen shows you which version of nLite you are running and allows you to choose an alternate language.
- To continue click on 'Next'.

- We must now direct nLite to the folder which contains the windows installation files
- To do this Click on 'Browse'.

- Select the folder you created above

- nLite recognizes the language and version of your windows installation files

- You can save your current presets for future use or load presets from the last time you used nLite

- At this screen we have the options to choose what we would like nLite to accomplish for us
- These are some of the most advanced and customizable features within nLite
- In this example all of the pages are selected, but you can pick and choose which ones to proceed with

- To Integrate a Service Pack first download the correct pack for your operating system and save it to your hard drive
- Again, you can save it anywhere you want to on your hard drive. I personally chose to save it to my desktop so that I can delete it afterwards
- As you can see, nLite makes things easy for us!
- Links to download the most recent service pack are embedded within nLite
- We must now direct nLite to the service pack file that was downloaded in the step above
- Click on the 'Select' tab and the following box will appear

- Use the pull down arrow at the top of the window to help choose the correct file
- When you have located it, click on it, and and then select the 'Open' tab
- nLite will automatically extract and integrate the service pack into your windows distribution folder

- In this window we have the option to add hotfixes and update patches into the installion
- I created a folder on my hard drive where I have downloaded all patches and updates for easy reference
- If you are using Internet Explorer, run Windows Update and look for the updates. Then download the actuall file by searching for it within Microsoft's website
- If you are using Mozilla, Firefox, or any other browser other than internet explorer, this link may be of some interest to you - Alternate Windows Update

Part 2

- After you have added all of the hotfixes which you have previously downloaded you should get something that looks like this
- Dont worry if you are not sure about whether an added file is supported. nLite will tell you

- Next we arrive at the option to integrate drivers that Windows does not install by default
- These can be drivers for almost any type of hardware as long as you use the correct driver

- Click on the 'insert' tab to search for drivers to install, make sure that you open .inf files only
- If your drivers are only in the .exe format you can sometimes extract them with Winzip, Powerarchiver, Winrar ...

- You should then have something similar to the screen below:

- Click the 'Next' button and you will be taken to the 'Remove Components' page
- In order to prevent you from removing a component that you need, make sure that you select the appropriate options in the next window

- We then come to the Components selection
- As you click on each corresponding + sign you will see a brief description in the right preview pane
- Pay special attention to anything highlighted in Red, be sure of what you are doing before removing these ones!

- The 'Advanced' button is used to add or remove additional files
- If you are not sure about this it is best not to even click it
- A friend of mine once stated, 'when it doubt, leave it out'.. lol

Part 3

- If you click on the 'Next' button you will arrive at the Unattended Setup portion
- This section allows you to provide an answer ahead of time to all of the questions that windows typically asks during installation, such as your cd key, networking information, and time zone
- This can really speed things up if it is done correctly

- Browse through all the tab pages and make adjustments if needed

- Options page allows some further tweaking which takes place automatically while windows installs
- If you click on the 'Services' button you can change which services run in the background while windows runs
- Click on 'Enable' and then select 'Reset' to modify each value
- Some of these services are necessary for windows to perform certain tasks while it is operating
- If you make a mistake here you can always change these values after windows installs by typing in 'Services.msc' in the 'Run' on your 'Start menu'.

- On the Patches page you can use some of the commonly used patches, they are generic and thus recommended over overwriting with prepatched files from the net.

- Here we have some additional tweaks which are optional as well - Click 'Next' to perform more tweaks with the way windows looks and feels after it is installed

- When you have re-configured everything to your liking, click on 'Next' to continue

- nLite will ask you to confirm, select 'Yes' to continue

- nLite will start processing all of the selected tasks
- The exact length of time it takes will vary on your system and on the number of tasks it is asked to perform
- Click the 'Next' to create an ISO compatible for cd burning

Click on the 'Make ISO' button and nLite will ask you were you would like to save this file

- You now have a bootable ISO image of your customized windows installation!
- To create the new cd open the ISO file with your cd writing software
- Don't forget to check the FAQ page

Installation

Make sure that the basic Linux development tools and the full FUSE package is already installed correctly on the computer. Please note, FUSE 2.6.0 or later is required to guarantee full data safety. Then type:

    ./configure
make
make install      # or 'sudo make install' if you aren't root

Usage

If there was no error during installation then the NTFS volume can be mounted in read-write mode for everybody as follows. Unmount the volume if it had already been mounted, replace /dev/sda1 and /mnt/windows, if needed.

    mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/windows

Please see the ntfs-3g manual page for more options and examples.

You can also make NTFS to be mounted during boot by adding the following line to the end of the /etc/fstab file:

    /dev/sda1 /mnt/windows ntfs-3g defaults 0 0

Laptops are all the rage. Once reserved for mobile professionals and elite executives, notebook PCs are replacing desktop computers in many organizations and homes. Driven by changing habits and the ease of locating and joining wireless networks, sales of laptop computers began exceeding those for desktop models in mid-year 2005. The trend shows no signs of easing.However, just buying a laptop doesn't ensure you automatically become an effective mobile computer user. In fact, the odds are you'll end up with a subpar PC if you purchase a model directly from many retailers' shelves.

Due to competitive pressures, many office supply and electronics chains aggressively market very low prices for laptop computers. The problem is, because of cost constraints, many of those PCs aren't well-equipped for most real-world computing. Here are 10 things to look for in your next laptop to help you choose a model that readily meets your needs.

#1: Operating system

Most PCs sold in office supply and major big box electronics stores come preloaded with Microsoft's consumer operating system. Deploying PCs powered by Windows XP Home or Vista Home Basic might not appear problematic, at least at first. In many cases, it may even appear beneficial. Why pay for the more expensive business edition if all you really need to do is write documents, crunch spreadsheets, send and receive e-mail, and use the Internet?

As so many organizations and users have discovered in the real world, the business versions of Microsoft's operating system offer many features that may well become necessities down the road. Many a client has found the migration from a workgroup environment to a client-server system complicated by the need to purchase new Windows XP Professional or Vista Business licenses (not too mention the time and cost associated with upgrading each user computer).

Microsoft's consumer operating systems typically don't support joining server domains. Nor have they readily enabled hosting remote desktop connections. For this reason, when purchasing a laptop PC, be sure it comes preloaded with the Microsoft operating system that will meet all your professional computing requirements.

#2: CPU

Laptop models advertised at attractive price points often don't have potent CPUs. When selecting a portable computer, buy a model with a CPU tailored to the rigors of mobile computing. Fail to do so, and you could end up with a PC that takes seven to eight minutes to fully boot into Windows, provides minimal battery life, and can't reasonably power the applications you use.

Intel's new Core 2 Duo CPUs (Figure A) perform exceptionally well. In addition to packing considerable processing power, these chips use less energy (resulting in improved battery life) and generate less heat than previous Pentium CPUs. Laptops featuring these chips (2.0 GHz and higher) should meet most users' computing needs for the next three or four years (the timeframe in which accountants amortize information technology assets).

#3: RAM

Many Windows Vista laptops are marketed as having a full 1 GB of RAM. While 1 GB of RAM works well for most Windows XP installations, it typically isn't enough to enable a Vista system to work smoothly. Any users planning to run multiple applications simultaneously on a Windows Vista laptop should consider loading the notebook with 2 GB of RAM.

While most users don't think of themselves as power users, 2 GB of RAM should be the norm for individuals planning to maintain multiple Office application windows while surfing the Internet and checking e-mail. Anyone planning to edit digital photographs or play more advanced games on a Vista system should also upgrade to 2 GB of RAM.

#4: Video card

Video performance is notoriously shortchanged on laptop computers. This is especially true for $500 notebooks frequently featured on the front covers of electronics and office supply store circulars.

Windows Vista operating systems, in particular, require potent video cards to maximize the system's many new features (including its resource-demanding Aero interface, translucent menus, and Flip 3D technologies). Windows XP computers that must power three-dimensional engineering and drafting programs also require strong video cards, as do gaming systems, regardless of OS.

When preparing to purchase a laptop computer, consider selecting a model with at least 128 MB of onboard RAM. If you plan to run drafting and engineering applications, video production software, or games, you should upgrade to video adapters with 256 MB of RAM.

#5: Ports

Many users assume that any modern laptop computer has numerous USB ports, as well as VGA, DVI, serial, and parallel ports. Those same users may learn a painful lesson; increasingly, in another effort at managing costs, laptop manufacturers are reducing the number of ports found on their PCs.

Budget notebook computers often ship with only a pair of USB ports, with no serial, parallel, or DVI ports and only a single VGA port (if a video port is even included). When purchasing a laptop, review the model's technical specifications and make sure that the chassis includes the ports you require. While most PCs now include integrated wired NICs, they don't always have PC Card slots, so that's an additional factor to consider before purchasing a new unit.

#6: Screen size

Carefully review your monitor needs before ordering a new notebook. You may think that a 17-inch widescreen display is just what you need. Ultimately, that may prove to be too big.

How's that?

Think about how you'll be using the laptop. If the computer will truly be used most often on the road, placing the notebook in a protective case, lugging it onto a cramped airplane, removing it for baggage inspectors, carrying it into a meeting room, and transporting it wherever else you go is made exponentially more difficult for each inch of display size beyond 12 inches.

Models with 12-inch displays are much easier to carry through doorways, into tight airline seats, and in coffee shops. They're also much lighter.

If your laptop will see only occasional travel, a larger model may be just what you need. But if not, consider purchasing a 12-inch model. You can always mate it to a 22-inch widescreen on your desk. Just be sure the laptop offers the correct ports to do so, as described in item #5.

#7: Integrated wireless

There should almost be a rule that any laptop sold today include an integrated 802.11g wireless (WiFi) adapter. But of course there is no rule, and not all models include one.

Make sure that the laptop you're considering includes the WiFi technology you use. For many, that will soon mean that the laptop includes integrated 802.11n compatibility. Read specifications closely to verify that the model you're buying provides the wireless connectivity you require.

#8: Integrated Bluetooth

Integrated Bluetooth technology used to be a luxury in laptops. Most users associate Bluetooth now with the wireless hands-free headsets used with cellular telephones, but Bluetooth is also growing in importance when it comes to connecting handheld devices to laptops.

Bluetooth technology enables synchronizing cell phone contacts, e-mail, calendars, and tasks lists wirelessly with a laptop. The same Bluetooth technology can also be used to add a wireless mouse to a notebook.

#9: Track pad

Most every laptop now comes equipped with a track pad mouse and corresponding click buttons. Some models include a simple track pad, while others include a track pad and an integrated pointer (usually nestled between the G and H keys). These so-called pencil-eraser pointers (Figure B) have long been popular, gracing everything from older Toshiba models to newer ThinkPads.

It's not important to choose a laptop computer that includes a sophisticated track pad and pencil-eraser pointer. Just make sure you select a notebook PC that features the pointing device you prefer.

Some models permit scrolling pages when two fingers are used versus scrolling within the currently displayed page when a single finger is used (such as with Apple laptops). Other laptops feature track pads that contain two separate tracking areas, such as are found on Compaq Presarios, for scrolling entire pages versus the contents of those pages.

Review the model you're preparing to buy to confirm you find its track pad agreeable. Even if you plan to use an external mouse, there are times when you'll be without it and the track pad is all you'll have.

#10: Battery life

Battery life is a critical consideration but not a deal breaker. When purchasing a laptop, if the only battery option doesn't provide the lifespan you require, you can always buy a second battery.

Many users, however, don't want the hassle that comes with carrying multiple batteries. In such cases, upgrade laptop orders to include 12-cell batteries (if available) instead of a standard six- or nine-cell battery. Bigger batteries almost always last longer, which is usually a key factor for mobile professionals traveling by air.

Just be aware that the larger cell batteries often have a greater footprint. In other words, they could violate a notebook's aesthetic look. But no one ever said functionality doesn't come at a price.

Summary

Laptops, increasingly, are decreasing in price. But a cheap laptop isn't necessarily a good laptop. Ensure that the laptop you buy meets your computing needs by carefully considering these 10 factors before making a purchase

In the following article, I refer to the GNU/Linux OS and various Free & Open-Source Software (FOSS) projects under the catch-all name of "Linux". It scans better.

If you've been pointed at this page, then the chances are you're a relatively new Linux user who's having some problems making the switch from Windows to Linux. This causes many problems for many people, hence this article was written. Many individual issues arise from this single problem, so the page is broken down into multiple problem areas.

Problem #1: Linux isn't exactly the same as Windows.

You'd be amazed how many people make this complaint. They come to Linux, expecting to find essentially a free, open-source version of Windows. Quite often, this is what they've been told to expect by over-zealous Linux users. However, it's a paradoxical hope.

The specific reasons why people try Linux vary wildly, but the overall reason boils down to one thing: They hope Linux will be better than Windows. Common yardsticks for measuring success are cost, choice, performance, and security. There are many others. But every Windows user who tries Linux, does so because they hope it will be better than what they've got.

Therein lies the problem.

It is logically impossible for any thing to be better than any other thing whilst remaining completely identical to it. A perfect copy may be equal, but it can never surpass. So when you gave Linux a try in hopes that it would be better, you were inescapably hoping that it would be different. Too many people ignore this fact, and hold up every difference between the two OSes as a Linux failure.

As a simple example, consider driver upgrades: one typically upgrades a hardware driver on Windows by going to the manufacturer's website and downloading the new driver; whereas in Linux you upgrade the kernel.

This means that a single Linux download & upgrade will give you the newest drivers available for your machine, whereas in Windows you would have to surf to multiple sites and download all the upgrades individually. It's a very different process, but it's certainly not a bad one. But many people complain because it's not what they're used to.

Or, as an example you're more likely to relate to, consider Firefox: One of the biggest open-source success stories. A web browser that took the world by storm. Did it achieve this success by being a perfect imitation of IE, the then-most-popular browser?

No. It was successful because it was better than IE, and it was better because it was different. It had tabbed browsing, live bookmarks, built-in searchbar, PNG support, adblock extensions, and other wonderful things. The "Find" functionality appeared in a toolbar at the bottom and looked for matches as you typed, turning red when you had no match. IE had no tabs, no RSS functionality, searchbars only via third-party extensions, and a find dialogue that required a click on "OK" to start looking and a click on "OK" to clear the "Not found" error message. A clear and inarguable demonstration of an open-source application achieving success by being better, and being better by being different. Had FF been an IE clone, it would have vanished into obscurity. And had Linux been a Windows clone, the same would have happened.

So the solution to problem #1: Remember that where Linux is familiar and the same as what you're used to, it isn't new & improved. Welcome the places where things are different, because only here does it have a chance to shine.

Problem #2: Linux is too different from Windows

The next issue arises when people do expect Linux to be different, but find that some differences are just too radical for their liking. Probably the biggest example of this is the sheer amount of choice available to Linux users. Whereas an out-of-the-box-Windows user has the Classic or XP desktop with Wordpad, Internet Explorer, and Outlook Express installed, an out-of-the-box-Linux user has hundreds of distros to choose from, then Gnome or KDE or Fluxbox or whatever, with vi or emacs or kate, Konqueror or Opera or Firefox or Mozilla, and so on and so forth.

A Windows user isn't used to making so many choices just to get up & running. Exasperated "Does there have to be so much choice?" posts are very common.

Does Linux really have to be so different from Windows? After all, they're both operating systems. They both do the same job: Power your computer & give you something to run applications on. Surely they should be more or less identical?

Look at it this way: Step outside and take a look at all the different vehicles driving along the road. These are all vehicles designed with more or less the same purpose: To get you from A to B via the roads. Note the variety in designs.

But, you may be thinking, car differences are really quite minor: they all have a steering wheel, foot-pedal controls, a gear stick, a handbrake, windows & doors, a petrol tank. . . If you can drive one car, you can drive any car!

Quite true. But did you not see that some people weren't driving cars, but were riding motorbikes instead. . ?

Switching from one version of Windows to another is like switching from one car to another. Win95 to Win98, I honestly couldn't tell the difference. Win98 to WinXP, it was a bigger change but really nothing major.

But switching from Windows to Linux is like switching from a car to a motorbike. They may both be OSes/road vehicles. They may both use the same hardware/roads. They may both provide an environment for you to run applications/transport you from A to B. But they use fundamentally different approaches to do so.

Windows/cars are not safe from viruses/theft unless you install an antivirus/lock the doors. Linux/motorbikes don't have viruses/doors, so are perfectly safe without you having to install an antivirus/lock any doors.

Or look at it the other way round:

Linux/cars were designed from the ground up for multiple users/passengers. Windows/motorbikes were designed for one user/passenger. Every Windows user/motorbike driver is used to being in full control of his computer/vehicle at all times. A Linux user/car passenger is used to only being in control of his computer/vehicle when logged in as root/sitting in the driver's seat.

Two different approaches to fulfilling the same goal. They differ in fundamental ways. They have different strengths and weaknesses: A car is the clear winner at transporting a family & a lot of cargo from A to B: More seats & more storage space. A motorbike is the clear winner at getting one person from A to B: Less affected by congestion and uses less fuel.

There are many things that don't change when you switch between cars and motorbikes: You still have to put petrol in the tank, you still have to drive on the same roads, you still have to obey the traffic lights and Stop signs, you still have to indicate before turning, you still have to obey the same speed limits.

But there are also many things that do change: Car drivers don't have to wear crash helmets, motorbike drivers don't have to put on a seatbelt. Car drivers have to turn the steering wheel to get around a corner, motorbike drivers have to lean over. Car drivers accelerate by pushing a foot-pedal, motorbike drivers accelerate by twisting a hand control.

A motorbike driver who tries to corner a car by leaning over is going to run into problems very quickly. And Windows users who try to use their existing skills and habits generally also find themselves having many issues. In fact, Windows "Power Users" frequently have more problems with Linux than people with little or no computer experience, for this very reason. Typically, the most vehement "Linux is not ready for the desktop yet" arguments come from ingrained Windows users who reason that if they couldn't make the switch, a less-experienced user has no chance. But this is the exact opposite of the truth.

So, to avoid problem #2: Don't assume that being a knowledgeable Windows user means you're a knowledgeable Linux user: When you first start with Linux, you are a novice.

Problem #3: Culture shock

Subproblem #3a: There is a culture

Windows users are more or less in a customer-supplier relationship: They pay for software, for warranties, for support, and so on. They expect software to have a certain level of usability. They are therefore used to having rights with their software: They have paid for technical support and have every right to demand that they receive it. They are also used to dealing with entities rather than people: Their contracts are with a company, not with a person.

Linux users are in more of a community. They don't have to buy the software, they don't have to pay for technical support. They download software for free & use Instant Messaging and web-based forums to get help. They deal with people, not corporations.

A Windows user will not endear himself by bringing his habitual attitudes over to Linux, to put it mildly.

The biggest cause of friction tends to be in the online interactions: A "3a" user new to Linux asks for help with a problem he's having. When he doesn't get that help at what he considers an acceptable rate, he starts complaining and demanding more help. Because that's what he's used to doing with paid-for tech support. The problem is that this isn't paid-for support. This is a bunch of volunteers who are willing to help people with problems out of the goodness of their hearts. The new user has no right to demand anything from them, any more than somebody collecting for charity can demand larger donations from contributors.

In much the same way, a Windows user is used to using commercial software. Companies don't release software until it's reliable, functional, and user-friendly enough. So this is what a Windows user tends to expect from software: It starts at version 1.0. Linux software, however, tends to get released almost as soon as it's written: It starts at version 0.1. This way, people who really need the functionality can get it ASAP; interested developers can get involved in helping improve the code; and the community as a whole stays aware of what's going on.

If a "3a" user runs into trouble with Linux, he'll complain: The software hasn't met his standards, and he thinks he has a right to expect that standard. His mood won't be improved when he gets sarcastic replies like "I'd demand a refund if I were you"

So, to avoid problem #3a: Simply remember that you haven't paid the developer who wrote the software or the people online who provide the tech support. They don't owe you anything.

Subproblem #3b: New vs. Old

Linux pretty much started out life as a hacker's hobby. It grew as it attracted more hobbyist hackers. It was quite some time before anybody but a geek stood a chance of getting a useable Linux installation working easily. Linux started out "By geeks, for geeks." And even today, the majority of established Linux users are self-confessed geeks.

And that's a pretty good thing: If you've got a problem with hardware or software, having a large number of geeks available to work on the solution is a definite plus.

But Linux has grown up quite a bit since its early days. There are distros that almost anybody can install, even distros that live on CDs and detect all your hardware for you without any intervention. It's become attractive to non-hobbyist users who are just interested in it because it's virus-free and cheap to upgrade. It's not uncommon for there to be friction between the two camps. It's important to bear in mind, however, that there's no real malice on either side: It's lack of understanding that causes the problems.

Firstly, you get the hard-core geeks who still assume that everybody using Linux is a fellow geek. This means they expect a high level of knowledge, and often leads to accusations of arrogance, elitism, and rudeness. And in truth, sometimes that's what it is. But quite often, it's not: It's elitist to say "Everybody ought to know this". It's not elitist to say "Everybody knows this" - quite the opposite.

Secondly, you get the new users who're trying to make the switch after a lifetime of using commercial OSes. These users are used to software that anybody can sit down & use, out-of-the-box.

The issues arise because group 1 is made up of people who enjoy being able to tear their OS apart and rebuild it the way they like it, while group 2 tends to be indifferent to the way the OS works, so long as it does work.

A parallel situation that can emphasize the problems is Lego. Picture the following:

New: I wanted a new toy car, and everybody's raving about how great Lego cars can be. So I bought some Lego, but when I got home, I just had a load of bricks and cogs and stuff in the box. Where's my car??

Old: You have to build the car out of the bricks. That's the whole point of Lego.

New: What?? I don't know how to build a car. I'm not a mechanic. How am I supposed to know how to put it all together??

Old: There's a leaflet that came in the box. It tells you exactly how to put the bricks together to get a toy car. You don't need to know how, you just need to follow the instructions.

New: Okay, I found the instructions. It's going to take me hours! Why can't they just sell it as a toy car, instead of making you have to build it??

Old: Because not everybody wants to make a toy car with Lego. It can be made into anything we like. That's the whole point.

New: I still don't see why they can't supply it as a car so people who want a car have got one, and other people can take it apart if they want to. Anyway, I finally got it put together, but some bits come off occasionally. What do I do about this? Can I glue it?

Old: It's Lego. It's designed to come apart. That's the whole point.

New: But I don't want it to come apart. I just want a toy car!

Old: Then why on Earth did you buy a box of Lego??

It's clear to just about anybody that Lego is not really aimed at people who just want a toy car. You don't get conversations like the above in real life. The whole point of Lego is that you have fun building it and you can make anything you like with it. If you've no interest in building anything, Lego's not for you. This is quite obvious.

As far as the long-time Linux user is concerned, the same holds true for Linux: It's an open-source, fully-customizeable set of software. That's the whole point. If you don't want to hack the components a bit, why bother to use it?

But there's been a lot of effort lately to make Linux more suitable for the non-hackers, a situation that's not a million miles away from selling pre-assembled Lego kits, in order to make it appeal to a wider audience. Hence you get conversations that aren't far away from the ones above: Newcomers complain about the existence of what the established users consider to be fundamental features, and resent having the read a manual to get something working. But complaining that there are too many distros; or that software has too many configuration options; or that it doesn't work perfectly out-of-the-box; is like complaining that Lego can be made into too many models, and not liking the fact that it can be broken down into bricks and built into many other things.

So, to avoid problem #3b: Just remember that what Linux seems to be now is not what Linux was in the past. The largest and most necessary part of the Linux community, the hackers and the developers, like Linux because they can fit it together the way they like; they don't like it in spite of having to do all the assembly before they can use it.

Problem #4: Designed for the designer

In the car industry, you'll very rarely find that the person who designed the engine also designed the car interior: It calls for totally different skills. Nobody wants an engine that only looks like it can go fast, and nobody wants an interior that works superbly but is cramped and ugly. And in the same way, in the software industry, the user interface (UI) is not usually created by the people who wrote the software.

In the Linux world, however, this is not so much the case: Projects frequently start out as one man's toy. He does everything himself, and therefore the interface has no need of any kind of "user friendly" features: The user knows everything there is to know about the software, he doesn't need help. Vi is a good example of software deliberately created for a user who already knows how it works: It's not unheard of for new users to reboot their computers because they couldn't figure out how else to get out of vi.

However, there is an important difference between a FOSS programmer and most commercial software writers: The software a FOSS programmer creates is software that he intends to use. So whilst the end result might not be as 'comfortable' for the novice user, they can draw some comfort in knowing that the software is designed by somebody who knows what the end-users needs are: He too is an end-user. This is very different from commercial software writers, who are making software for other people to use: They are not knowledgeable end-users.

So whilst vi has an interface that is hideously unfriendly to new users, it is still in use today because it is such a superb interface once you know how it works. Firefox was created by people who regularly browse the Web. The Gimp was built by people who use it to manipulate graphics files. And so on.

So Linux interfaces are frequently a bit of a minefield for the novice: Despite its popularity, vi should never be considered by a new user who just wants to quickly make a few changes to a file. And if you're using software early in its lifecycle, a polished, user-friendly interface is something you're likely to find only in the "ToDo" list: Functionality comes first. Nobody designs a killer interface and then tries to add functionality bit by bit. They create functionality, and then improve the interface bit by bit.

So to avoid #4 issues: Look for software that's specifically aimed at being easy for new users to use, or accept that some software that has a steeper learning curve than you're used to. To complain that vi isn't friendly enough for new users is to be laughed at for missing the point.

Problem #5: The myth of "user-friendly"

This is a big one. It's a very big term in the computing world, "user-friendly". It's even the name of a particularly good webcomic. But it's a bad term.

The basic concept is good: That software be designed with the needs of the user in mind. But it's always addressed as a single concept, which it isn't.

If you spend your entire life processing text files, your ideal software will be fast and powerful, enabling you to do the maximum amount of work for the minimum amount of effort. Simple keyboard shortcuts and mouseless operation will be of vital importance.

But if you very rarely edit text files, and you just want to write an occasional letter, the last thing you want is to struggle with learning keyboard shortcuts. Well-organized menus and clear icons in toolbars will be your ideal.

Clearly, software designed around the needs of the first user will not be suitable for the second, and vice versa. So how can any software be called "user-friendly", if we all have different needs?

The simple answer: User-friendly is a misnomer, and one that makes a complex situation seem simple.

What does "user-friendly" really mean? Well, in the context in which it is used, "user friendly" software means "Software that can be used to a reasonable level of competence by a user with no previous experience of the software." This has the unfortunate effect of making lousy-but-familiar interfaces fall into the category of "user-friendly".

Subproblem #5a: Familiar is friendly

So it is that in most "user-friendly" text editors & word processors, you Cut and Paste by using Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V. Totally unintuitive, but everybody's used to these combinations, so they count as a "friendly" combination.

So when somebody comes to vi and finds that it's "d" to cut, and "p" to paste, it's not considered friendly: It's not what anybody is used to.

Is it superior? Well, actually, yes.

With the Ctrl-X approach, how do you cut a word from the document you're currently in? (No using the mouse!)

From the start of the word, Ctrl-Shift-Right to select the word.

The vi approach? dw deletes the word.

The vi approach is far more versatile and actually more intuitive: "X" and "V" are not obvious or memorable "Cut" and "Paste" commands, whereas "dw" to delete a word, and "p" to put it back is perfectly straightforward. But "X" and "V" are what we all know, so whilst vi is clearly superior, it's unfamiliar. Ergo, it is considered unfriendly. On no other basis, pure familiarity makes a Windows-like interface seem friendly. And as we learned in problem #1, Linux is necessarily different to Windows. Inescapably, Linux always appears less "user-friendly" than Windows.

To avoid #5a problems, all you can really do is try and remember that "user-friendly" doesn't mean "What I'm used to": Try doing things your usual way, and if it doesn't work, try and work out what a total novice would do.

Subproblem #5b: Inefficient is friendly

This is a sad but inescapable fact. Paradoxically, the harder you make it to access an application's functionality, the friendlier it can seem to be.

This is because friendliness is added to an interface by using simple, visible 'clues' - the more, the better. After all, if a complete novice to computers is put in front of a WYSIWYG word processor and asked to make a bit of text bold, which is more likely:

He'll guess that "Ctrl-B" is the usual standard

He'll look for clues, and try clicking on the "Edit" menu. Unsuccessful, he'll try the next likely one along the row of menus: "Format". The new menu has a "Font" option, which seems promising. And Hey! There's our "Bold" option. Success!

Next time you do any processing, try doing every job via the menus: No shortcut keys, and no toolbar icons. Menus all the way. You'll find you slow to a crawl, as every task suddenly demands a multitude of keystrokes/mouseclicks.

Making software "user-friendly" in this fashion is like putting training wheels on a bicycle: It lets you get up & running immediately, without any skill or experience needed. It's perfect for a beginner. But nobody out there thinks that all bicycles should be sold with training wheels: If you were given such a bicycle today, I'll wager the first thing you'd do is remove them for being unnecessary encumbrances: Once you know how to ride a bike, training wheels are unnecessary.

And in the same way, a great deal of Linux software is designed without "training wheels" - it's designed for users who already have some basic skills in place. After all, nobody's a permanent novice: Ignorance is short-lived, and knowledge is forever. So the software is designed with the majority in mind.

This might seem an excuse: After all, MS Word has all the friendly menus, and it has toolbar buttons, and it has shortcut keys. . . Best of all worlds, surely? Friendly and efficient.

However, this has to be put into perspective: Firstly, the practicalities: having menus and toolbars and shortcuts and all would mean a lot of coding, and it's not like Linux developers all get paid for their time. Secondly, it still doesn't really take into account serious power-users: Very few professional wordsmiths use MS Word. Ever meet a coder who used MS Word? Compare that to how many use emacs & vi.

Why is this? Firstly, because some "friendly" behaviour rules out efficient behaviour: See the "Cut&Copy" example above. And secondly, because most of Word's functionality is buried in menus that you have to use: Only the most common functionality has those handy little buttons in toolbars at the top. The less-used functions that are still vital for serious users just take too long to access.

Something to bear in mind, however, is that "training wheels" are often available as "optional extras" for Linux software: They might not be obvious, but frequently they're available.

Take mplayer. You use it to play a video file by typing mplayer filename in a terminal. You fastforward & rewind using the arrow keys and the PageUp & PageDown keys. This is not overly "user-friendly". However, if you instead type gmplayer filename, you'll get the graphical frontend, with all its nice, friendly , familiar buttons.

Take ripping a CD to MP3 (or Ogg): Using the command-line, you need to use cdparanoia to rip the files to disc. Then you need an encoder. . . It's a hassle, even if you know exactly how to use the packages (imho). So download & install something like Grip. This is an easy-to-use graphical frontend that uses cdparanoia and encoders behind-the-scenes to make it really easy to rip CDs, and even has CDDB support to name the files automatically for you.

The same goes for ripping DVDs: The number of options to pass to transcode is a bit of a nightmare. But using dvd::rip to talk to transcode for you makes the whole thing a simple, GUI-based process which anybody can do.

So to avoid #5b issues: Remember that "training wheels" tend to be bolt-on extras in Linux, rather than being automatically supplied with the main product. And sometimes, "training wheels" just can't be part of the design.

Problem #6: Imitation vs. Convergence

An argument people often make when they find that Linux isn't the Windows clone they wanted is to insist that this is what Linux has been (or should have been) attempting to be since it was created, and that people who don't recognise this and help to make Linux more Windows-like are in the wrong. They draw on many arguments for this:

Linux has gone from Command-Line- to Graphics-based interfaces, a clear attempt to copy Windows

Nice theory, but false: The original X windowing system was released in 1984, as the successor to the W windowing system ported to Unix in 1983. Windows 1.0 was released in 1985. Windows didn't really make it big until version 3, released in 1990 - by which time, X windows had for years been at the X11 stage we use today. Linux itself was only started in 1991. So Linux didn't create a GUI to copy Windows: It simply made use of a GUI that existed long before Windows.

Windows 3 gave way to Windows 95 - making a huge level of changes to the UI that Microsoft has never equalled since. It had many new & innovative features: Drag & drop functionality; taskbars, and so on. All of which have since been copied by Linux, of course.

Actually. . . no. All the above existed prior to Microsoft making use of them. NeXTSTeP in particular was a hugely advanced (for the time) GUI, and it predated Win95 significantly - version 1 released in 1989, and the final version in 1995.

Okay, okay, so Microsoft didn't think up the individual features that we think of as the Windows Look-and-Feel. But it still created a Look-and-Feel, and Linux has been trying to imitate that ever since.

To debunk this, one must discuss the concept of convergent evolution. This is where two completely different and independent systems evolve over time to become very similar. It happens all the time in biology. For example, sharks and dolphins. Both are (typically) fish-eating marine organisms of about the same size. Both have dorsal fins, pectoral fins, tail fins, and similar, streamlined shapes.

However, sharks evolved from fish, while dolphins evolved from a land-based quadrupedal mammal of some sort. The reason they have very similar overall appearances is that they both evolved to be as efficient as possible at living within a marine environment. At no stage did pre-dolphins (the relative newcomers) look at sharks and think "Wow, look at those fins. They work really well. I'll try and evolve some myself!"

Similarly, it's perfectly true to look at early Linux desktops and see FVWM and TWM and a lot of other simplistic GUIs. And then look at modern Linux desktops, and see Gnome & KDE with their taskbars and menus and eye-candy. And yes, it's true to say that they're a lot more like Windows than they used to be.

But then, so is Windows: Windows 3.0 had no taskbar that I remember. And the Start menu? What Start menu?

Linux didn't have a desktop anything like modern Windows. Microsoft didn't either. Now they both do. What does this tell us?

It tells us that developers in both camps looked for ways of improving the GUI, and because there are only a limited number of solutions to a problem, they often used very similar methods. Similarity does not in any way prove or imply imitation. Remembering that will help you avoid straying into problem #6 territory.

Problem #7: That FOSS thing.

Oh, this causes problems. Not intrinsically: The software being free and open-source is a wonderful and immensely important part of the whole thing. But understanding just how different FOSS is from proprietary software can be too big an adjustment for some people to make.

I've already mentioned some instances of this: People thinking they can demand technical support and the like. But it goes far beyond that.

Microsoft's Mission Statement is "A computer on every desktop" - with the unspoken rider that each computer should be running Windows. Microsoft and Apple both sell operating systems, and both do their utmost to make sure their products get used by the largest number of people: They're businesses, out to make money.

And then there is FOSS. Which, even today, is almost entirely non-commercial.

Before you reach for your email client to tell me about Red Hat, Suse, Linspire and all: Yes, I know they "sell" Linux. I know they'd all love Linux to be adopted universally, especially their own flavour of it. But don't confuse the suppliers with the manufacturers. The Linux kernel was not created by a company, and is not maintained by people out to make a profit with it. The GNU tools were not created by a company, and are not maintained by people out to make a profit with them. The X11 windowing system. . . well, the most popular implementation is xorg right now, and the ".org" part should tell you all you need to know. Desktop software: Well, you might be able to make a case for KDE being commercial, since it's Qt-based. But Gnome, Fluxbox, Enlightenment, etc. are all non-profit. There are people out to sell Linux, but they are very much the minority.

Increasing the number of end-users of proprietary software leads to a direct financial benefit to the company that makes it. This is simply not the case for FOSS: There is no direct benefit to any FOSS developer in increasing the userbase. Indirect benefits, yes: Personal pride; an increased potential for finding bugs; more likelihood of attracting new developers; possibly a chance of a good job offer; and so on.

But Linus Torvalds doesn't make money from increased Linux usage. Richard Stallman doesn't get money from increased GNU usage. All those servers running OpenBSD and OpenSSH don't put a penny into the OpenBSD project's pockets. And so we come to the biggest problem of all when it comes to new users and Linux:

They find out they're not wanted.

New users come to Linux after spending their lives using an OS where the end-user's needs are paramount, and "user friendly" and "customer focus" are considered veritable Holy Grails. And they suddenly find themselves using an OS that still relies on 'man' files, the command-line, hand-edited configuration files, and Google. And when they complain, they don't get coddled or promised better things: They get bluntly shown the door.

That's an exaggeration, of course. But it is how a lot of potential Linux converts perceived things when they tried and failed to make the switch.

In an odd way, FOSS is actually a very selfish development method: People only work on what they want to work on, when they want to work on it. Most people don't see any need to make Linux more attractive to inexperienced end-users: It already does what they want it to do, why should they care if it doesn't work for other people?

FOSS has many parallels with the Internet itself: You don't pay the writer of a webpage/the software to download and read/install it. Ubiquitous broadband/User-friendly interfaces are of no great interest to somebody who already has broadband/knows how to use the software. Bloggers/developers don't need to have lots of readers/users to justify blogging/coding. There are lots of people making lots of money off it, but it's not by the old-fashioned "I own this and you have to pay me if you want some of it" method that most businesses are so enamoured of; it's by providing services like tech-support/e-commerce.

Linux is not interested in market share. Linux does not have customers. Linux does not have shareholders, or a responsibility to the bottom line. Linux was not created to make money. Linux does not have the goal of being the most popular and widespread OS on the planet.

All the Linux community wants is to create a really good, fully-featured, free operating system. If that results in Linux becoming a hugely popular OS, then that's great. If that results in Linux having the most intuitive, user-friendly interface ever created, then that's great. If that results in Linux becoming the basis of a multi-billion dollar industry, then that's great.

It's great, but it's not the point. The point is to make Linux the best OS that the community is capable of making. Not for other people: For itself. The oh-so-common threats of "Linux will never take over the desktop unless it does such-and-such" are simply irrelevant: The Linux community isn't trying to take over the desktop. They really don't care if it gets good enough to make it onto your desktop, so long as it stays good enough to remain on theirs. The highly-vocal MS-haters, pro-Linux zealots, and money-making FOSS purveyors might be loud, but they're still minorities.

That's what the Linux community wants: an OS that can be installed by whoever really wants it. So if you're considering switching to Linux, first ask yourself what you really want.

If you want an OS that doesn't chauffeur you around, but hands you the keys, puts you in the driver's seat, and expects you to know what to do: Get Linux. You'll have to devote some time to learning how to use it, but once you've done so, you'll have an OS that you can make sit up and dance.

If you really just want Windows without the malware and security issues: Read up on good security practices; install a good firewall, malware-detector, and anti-virus; replace IE with a more secure browser; and keep yourself up-to-date with security updates. There are people out there (myself included) who've used Windows since 3.1 days right through to XP without ever being infected with a virus or malware: you can do it too. Don't get Linux: It will fail miserably at being what you want it to be.

If you really want the security and performance of a Unix-based OS but with a customer-focussed attitude and an world-renowned interface: Buy an Apple Mac. OS X is great. But don't get Linux: It will not do what you want it to do.

It's not just about "Why should I want Linux?". It's also about "Why should Linux want me?"

File Manager Commanders

The Norton Commander is the most useful DOS program ever written. Symantec (The makers of NC) dropped the ball when Windows 95 arrived. They now have Norton Navigator, which is not really any different than Windows Explorer. There is a Norton Commander for Windows 95 that was written overseas (Ireland, I believe), but many of these Shareware "Commanders" are better implementations. There does seem to be a Commander program for every OS: Unix, Linux, OS/2, Windows, and DOS. I haven't found one for the MacOS, but I don't have a Mac, so I haven't looked very hard.

I am going to try to include a link to every "Commander" available. However, I primarily use Windows 95/98 and only somewhat beyond the "novice" stage in Linux, so the selection listed here may be somewhat biased. A Commander program has to have the two panel interface and the standard F key assignments: F3 - View, F4 - Edit, F5 - Copy, F6 - Rename/Move, F7 - Make Directory, and F8 - Delete. Also, support for whatever compressed archive is standard for the OS, ZIP for DOS/Windows, tar.gz for Unix, etc. The ever present command line is also a super handy feature.

Windows Explorer and File manager are not very good at Exploring or managing. The Norton Commander interface is much more intuitive. Virtually all of these programs have built in ZIP/UNZIP capabilities, eliminating the need for third party compression programs. Since ZIP archives are handled the same as files and directories, there is no need to learn another interface.

This one is shaping up nicely. The options for making self extracting zip files makes this one worth the price. New in this version (.Net) is a CD/DVD burn feature, great for backup! See the website for a complete list of what's new.

WinNc.Net is a file manager for Windows XP and 2000/ME/98/95 that replaces the use of the existing Windows Explorer. Developed by a small Dutch multimedia company called Dunes MultiMedia, WinNc uses the same key shortcuts and the same mouse functionality as a well-known DOS file manager. Lots of tool buttons and menu items provide access to standard file-management methods. You can e.g. easily format, copy, move, delete, view, and edit files.

WinNavigator - Shareware $29.

This seems to a pretty good one. Some unique features: Internet Dialer, MP3 -> .WAV converter, Resource Explorer for EXE files, font viewer, and more. Also includes built in viewer/editor. I couldn't figure out how to make a .zip file with it.

Norton Commander for Windows 95- Windows 95/NT; Commercial; Internal Zip; No Internal viewer, internal editor.

No mention of this on the Symantec web site. It was written overseas. The Link Feature and NC Scheduler make this one worth it. One BIG problem with it is that it has NO BUILT IN VIEWER, can only use Quick View Plus. Available directly from Symantec, the only way it is available now is for download. You have to go to the UK section of their web site to find it. It is 34 pounds (about US $55). Also, Version 2 now does FTP and is "Y2K compliant".

Disco Commander - Windows 95, Shareware, around $20

A GUI NC lookalike. Built in graphics viewer and a few other goodies. Demo version limited to C: drive and first level of subdirectories.

WinSCP is freeware SCP (Secure CoPy) client for Windows 95/98/2000/NT using SSH (Secure SHell). Its main purpose is safe copying files between local and remote computer. Beyond this basic function, WinSCP manages some other actions with files.

The settings for radar speed traps detector. Your Nokia cell phone can be programmed to pick up radar speed traps, when programmed your cell phone picks up the radar and alerts you on the message alert tone. ( Doesn't work with Nokia 7110! )

8. Clear back to normal, within a few seconds your phone will display a radar sign with five zero's next to it. It is now activated.

Unfortunately only Nokia phones have this function. The Cell Phone info display needs to be de-activated. Settings -> Phone Settings -> Cell Info display. Each time you turn off your phone, or even each time you loose contact with your carrier, you'll have to activate it again... It is done using steps 1 through 5 above, but the number (00000) will be already on the field as a default.

The James Bond Trick
If you short-circuit the left middle and right pins on the bottom of the phone with all connections touching each other, the Nokia software hangs! The profile "Headset" will be activated. Before you do this just activate the "Automatic Answer" in the headset profile and set the ringing volume to "Mute". Now you can use your phone for checking out what people are talking about in a room. Just place it under a table in a room and call it. The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen to what people are saying!

Network Monitor
There is a hidden menu inside your Nokia phone. If you want to activate it, you'll have to re-program some chips inside of your phone.
Check your software version. You can only continue if you have v4.33, v4.73 or v5.24.
Take apart the phone.
De-solder the EEPROM (ATMEL AT 24C64)
Read out the data with an EEPROM programmer and save it to a file (Backup)
If you have v.33 or v4.73, change the address "03B8" from "00" to "FF"
If you have v5.24 then change the address "0378" from "00" to "FF"
Write the new data to the EEPROM and solder it back to the phone
Power on your phone and you should have "Netmonitor" enabled.
The Network Monitor gives you the following information:
Carrier number, MS RX Level in DBM, Received signal quality, MS TX power level, C1 (Path loss criterion, used for cell selection and reselection). The range is -99 to 99, RTL (Radio link timeout), Timeslot, Indication of the transmitter status, Information on the Network parameters, TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity), Cell identification (Cell ID, Number of cells being used), MCC (Mobile country code), MCN (Mobile network code), LAC (Location area code), Ciphering (On/Off), Hopping (On/Off), DTX (On/Off), Discard cell barred information.

Cell Broadcast
While Short Message Service (SMS) can be configured as a personal service, Cell Broadcast is a general service which is designed for subscribers of a specific cell or topic. For example, a subscriber to cell 050 in England will receive information on the GSM tower currently being used by their phone. This new concept brings a whole new meaning to the term mobile communications as the phone is now able to receive information such as share prices or weather updates without the need of data cards and computers. NOKIA 2160 SERIES CELLULAR TELEPHONE NAM PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS

The Nokia 2160 series hand portable CMT uses an EEPROM NAM that can be
programmed directly from the standard user keypad. In order to access the
NAM, you must enter the special access code currently programmed into the
phone. Once the programming mode is accessed, NAM parameters are loaded
by entering them into the display and "storing" them to selected memory
locations. Be sure to obtain all parameters before proceeding.

EASY NAM PROGRAMMING

1. Turn on phone.

2. Enter the Easy NAM access code. Access code is: *#639#

3. Verify the display now reads "Cellular Number" and enter the 10 digit
MIN for the phone.

4. Press the softkey under the word "OK" in the display. If less than 10
digits are entered an error message will prompt you to reenter the
number.

5. Verify the display reads "Enter code" and enter the five digit SID
followed by four zeros. (Example 001750000 is a SID of 175 followed
by four zeros). An error message will display if an incorrect entry
is made. Do not add more than four zeros to the code.

Note: Change the Lock code by adding a pound sign and new lock code after
the code. (Example: 001750000#7788. Lock code = 7788).

Change the Language code by adding a pound sign (#) and new
language code after the code. (Example: 001750000#2. Language = 2)

Language Code: 0 (default) = English, 1 = French, 2 = Spanish,
3 = Portuguese

Change the Lock code and Language code by separating each set of
numbers by a pound sign. (Example: 001750000#7788#2). The SID =
00175, Lock code = 7788, Language = 2 (Spanish).

6. Press the softkey under the word "OK" in the display.

7. The display will tell you that the activation was OK and instruct you
to power the phone off, then on again. When the phone powers back up,
it will automatically select the correct system (A or B).

ACCESS NAM PROGRAMMING MODE:

1. Turn the phone on.

2. Enter the NAM access code. Factory default is: *3001#12345

3. Enter softkey [MENU].

[SELECT] and the current 5-digit security code will appear in the
display. Default is 12345.

13. If you wish to change the Security code at this time, use the numeric
keys to change the value.

14. Press the softkey [OK] to store changes.

PROGRAMMING EMERGENCY NUMBERS:

15. From Main Level Menu use the scroll key to select the "Emergency"
menu. Press softkey [SELECT] to enter the emergency numbers.

19. From the Main Level Menu use the scroll key to display the "SW
version" menu, press [SELECT] to view software version, date and
product type.

20. Press [QUIT] to exit the menu.

SERIAL NUMBER (ESN):

21. From the Main Level Menu, use the scroll key to display the "Serial
No." or ESN of the phone.

22. Press [QUIT] to exit the menu.

PROGRAMMED: (DATE THE PHONE IS FIRST PROGRAMMED)

23. From the Main Level Menu, use the key to display the "Programmed" menu.

24. Press [SELECT] and enter a four digit number that corresponds to the
month and year the phone is sold. Example (mmyy) 0197 = January 1997,
0996 = September 1996.

Note: This menu location can be programmed only one time. Once the date
has been entered it cannot be changed. Any attempt to enter the
menu once it has been programmed will receive a short beep and the
message "DATE ALREADY STORED".

EXITING NAM PROGRAMMING:

25. To exit the NAM programming mode, turn the phone off and leave it off
for five seconds.

FIELD TEST:

26. The FIELD TEST MODE is used to investigate how the phone is reacting
to the cellular system. The FIELD TEST information covers signal
strength, battery charging, cellular state and encryption status. The
information is organized to display information relating to Analog
Control Channels, Digital Control Channels, Analog Voice Channels and
Digital Voice Channels. All the information provided in the FIELD
TEST display is in accordance with IS-136.

For further information about the FIELD TEST mode, contact Nokia
Customer Service at 1-800-456-5553 and ask for Nokia Field Service
Bulletin ?????.

27. To activate the FIELD TEST mode you must be in NAM programming.
Instructions for entering NAM programming are listed above. Use the
following steps to enable the FIELD TEST mode.

28. From the main menu use the scroll key to display the "FIELD TEST" menu
and press the softkey [SELECT]. Use the key to select ENABLE and
press the softkey [OK].

29. Turn the Nokia 2160 off then back on. Once the power up self test is
complete, the FIELD TEST display will begin automatically. Scroll
through the different displays using the scroll key.

30. To disable the FIELD TEST mode, return to NAM programming and disable
the function under the FIELD TEST menu.

PROGRAMMING PSIDS AND RSIDS:

The Nokia 2160 provides the option to program Private (PSIDs) and
Residential (RSIDs) System ID's as prescribed by IS-136. The PSID/RSID
list is programmed to support selection/reselection processes, system
selection, and SID display functions. Programming the PSID/RSID list is
part of the NAM programming menu. All three NAMs have their own PSID/RSID
list. Follow these instructions to program the PSID/RSID lists.

1. Enter the NAM programming menu and select NAM 1 (or the desired NAM).
(NOTE: PSID/RSID is currently only available in the NAM 1 location.
PSID/RSID is included in NAM 2 and 3 for future use.)

2. Use the scroll key to display "PSID/RSID LISTS" and press [SELECT].

3. Use the scroll key to select the P/RSID 1 or the desired P/RSID (1
through 5). Press the [SELECT] softkey.

4. Each list contains:

System type Select Private or Residential system type.

PSID/RSID System ID for the Private or Residential system.
Indicates which PSID/RSID the mobile will respond
to.

System ID Connected System ID. The SID the PSID/RSID is
connected to.

Alpha Tag The name of the Private or Residential SID.

Operator Code(SOC) This is the System Operator code. (US-McCaw
Cellular = 001 (dec), Canada-Rogers Cantel Inc.
= 002 (dec) and McCaw Cellular Communications (for
international) = 2049 (dec).

Country Code Enter the country code of the PSID/RSID

Nokia 2170

(170-2213/4) Security

The 170-2213 and the 170-2214 are both the same telephone. The only
difference is where they are sold.

Security Code

Your phone will prompt you for a five-digit security code to enter certain
features. The factory default code is 12345, and that is what your phone
will accept until it is changed.

If your service provider hasn't already changed your security code, it's
recommended you have it changed immediately. See "To change your security
code (Menu 5 3)" below.

Note: When entering your security code, ** will appear on the display
to keep others from viewing your code.

If you make a mistake entering the code,

Erase the incorrect digit by pressing CLR or press and hold CLR to exit
the current function.

What if you enter the wrong security code?

You can still enter it again. But if you enter the wrong security code
five times in a row, your phone will activate a security timer.

If this happens, your phone will not accept a security code for about five
minutes, even if you enter the correct one. You can still use your phone,
but any attempts to enter the security code will reset the timer.

Once the timer has elapsed, you may re-enter the correct security code to
access security code protected features.

Note: Your phone must remain on during the five minute security timer or
the timer will reset for another five minutes.

Menu 5 1, Automatic Phone Lock

When this feature is activated, your phone will be locked every time you
switch on your phone. You must enter a four-digit lock code to unlock
your phone. Without entering your lock code, you'll be denied access to
almost every memory and menu function.

When your phone is locked, your phone will only receive incoming calls and
make outgoing calls to the phone numbers stored in memory locations 2, 3,
and 4.

If your phone is locked and you switch your phone off and back on again,
you must enter the lock code.

Note: When your phone is locked, calls may be possible to the emergency
number programmed into your phone (e.g. 911 or other official
emergency number) including calls with Emergency Key 9.

To enter the lock code

At Enter lock code: enter the lock code and press OK.

Note: Your security code can be entered in place of the lock code when
you are asked to enter the lock code.

To answer a call with Auto Lock on

Press TALK.

Can you make calls with Auto Lock on?

Yes. You can call numbers that are stored in memory locations 2, 3, and
4, which are unlocked. To make full use of this feature, you may wish to
store your most frequently-dialed numbers in these locations.

To call unlocked memory locations while Auto Lock is on

There are four different ways you can do this:

1. Press and hold CLR to go to the start screen. Press / or / to
desired unlocked location, then press TALK.

2. Enter number as it is stored and press TALK.

3. Press desired unlocked location (either 2, 3, or 4) and press TALK.

4. Press and hold the desired unlocked location.

To turn Auto Lock off

Use Menu 5 1 and your lock code.

To change your lock code (Menu 5 2)

You can change your lock code with your phone's menu. Your default code
is set to the last 4 digits of your phone number. In a lock code, only
characters 0 to 9 * and # are accepted.

Changing the lock code is simple. Just press Menu 5 2 and follow the
prompts to do this. Make sure you have your security code handy. You'll
need it to change the lock code.

Note: Avoid entering access codes similar to emergency numbers to prevent
accidental emergency calls.

To change your security code (Menu 5 3)

The default security code for your phone is 12345. It's recommended that
you change this code immediately. Just press Menu 5 3 and follow the
prompts to do this, and make sure you write the new code down and store it
away from your phone.

Menu 5 4, Restrict Calls

This feature allows you to restrict outgoing calls from your phone. You
can select the level of restrictions through a series of menu choices.

Menu 5 4 1, Restrict outgoing calls

Allowed means that all calls can be made as usual.

Blocked means that no calls can be made.

Limited means that calls can be made only to phone numbers stored in
certain memory locations.

When restricting outgoing calls by selecting Limited, you are prompted for
an Allow from location: and To location: value. for example, at Allow
from location: enter 1 and To location: enter 15, to allow only calls to
the numbers stored in locations 1-15.

Note: When calls are restricted, calls may be possible to the emergency
number programmed into your phone (e.g. 911 or other official
emergency numbers). However, Emergency Key 9 may not operate
depending on the type of restriction you choose.

The default setting for this feature is Allowed.

Menu 5 4 2, Restrict international calls

Allowed means you can make international calls and Blocked means you
cannot.

The default setting for this feature Allowed.

Menu 5 5, Hide Memory

This feature will prevent your phone from displaying the phone number
stored in your personal directory.

To hide numbers in memory

Use Menu 5 5. You'll need your security code to do this.

To hide only one location, enter the location number at both the Hide from
location: and To location: prompts.

To hide a series of locations, such as locations 10-15, enter the first
location, for example 10, at Hide from location: and the last location,
for example 15, at To location:

Temporary Lists & Call Timers

Your phone automatically stores the last ten numbers you've dialed,
numbers of the last ten calls you've answered, and the numbers of the last
ten calls you missed. It also gives you ten temporary storage places in a
"notepad."

Note: Your phone displays the phone numbers of received and missed calls
only if you have subscribed to Caller ID and the wireless system is
able to identify the caller.

Menu 01 1, Dialed Numbers

Press and hold CLR to go to the start screen.

Press TALK, then quickly press / or / to scroll the list.

If you want to call any of the other numbers in the list, press TALK while
that number is displayed.

To call the first number that appears on your screen, simply wait a few
seconds and your phone will dial it automatically.

The top right corner of the display shows the location number of the last
dialed number (L0 - L9). Menu 01 1 also accesses the Dialed Numbers list.

Menu 01 2, Answered Calls

Press and hold CLR to go to the start screen.

Press * then / or / to scroll the list.

This shows the calling phone numbers of the ten most recent calls you've
answered. If the number listed is stored in your personal directory,
press ABC to view associated names. Also, you can press Menu 01 2 to
access this list.

Menu 01 3, Missed Calls

When you miss a phone call, your phone will display 1 MISSED CALL. Simply
press List to view the number. If you wish to view the number later,
press Quit.

You can view the number later by using the following step.

Press and hold CLR to go to the start screen.

Quickly press * twice (a + will appear on the display), then press / or
/ to scroll the list.

This shows you the calling phone numbers of the 10 most recent calls
you've missed. Menu 013 also accesses the Missed Calls list.

Notepad

Use the Notepad to store names and numbers that you don't want stored in
your personal directory. The Notepad holds up to 10 names and numbers.

To store numbers and names in notepad

1. Enter name and number as you normally would, but at STORE IN LOCATION,
press #.

2. Press OK.

See "Your Personal Directory" in Faxback Doc. # 48319 for details on
storing numbers.

To see numbers and names in notepad

Press and hold CLR to go to the start screen.

Press #, then / or /.

The top right corner of the display shows the location number of the
notepad (0 degrees - 9 degrees).

To clear temporary lists and notepad

Press Menu 01 4.

This clears Dialed Numbers, Answered Calls, Missed Calls, and the notepad.
You cannot undo this operation, so be careful!

Menu 01 7, Call Timers

This feature is for those of you who want to keep track of calls for
billing purposes. Your phone has separate call timers for each phone
number (NAM) your phone uses. This shows call durations for the NAM that
is currently selected.

Use Menu 01 7 and press / repeatedly to show durations of LAST CALL. ALL
CALLS, HOME AREA CALLS, ROAMING CALLS & LIFE TIMER.

Note: The actual time invoiced for calls by your service provider may
vary, depending upon network features, rounding off for billing,
and so forth.

To clear Call Timers

Use Menu 01 7 6 to clear all call timers. You must enter the security
code to clear all call timers. Note that the Life Timer, which is a
running total of all calls made and received with your phone, cannot be
reset.

Service Prover Lock
The service provider (SP) lock is used to lock the cell phone to the SP's SIM card. Once the cell phone is locked to a specific operator, if one inserts a SIM card from a different operator the phone will refuse to accept it! The cell phone will however accept another SIM card from the same operator.

All Nokia phones (2110 and newer) have four different SIM locks which can be used to lock the phone for upto 4 different providers. But most phones with restriction only have one lock activated. ( lock 1)

The main code used in Nokia phones is:
#pw+(master code)+Y#
This code is able to check, activate or remove Sim card restriction (SP-lock).
Use the * key to get the p, + and w chars.
'Y' has to be 1,2,3 or 4 - depending of what lock you what to deal with.

#pw+1234567890+3# for Country-Lock status

(I can NOT give you the master code - SO DON'T ASK ME FOR IT !!!!!!!)

If you just want to check your phone use 10 random numbers Eg. 1234567890 as the (master code)
eg. To check if phone if restricted on lock 1 type the following code:

Please NOTE that these codes could be used with care! A user told me that it's only possible to type in about 3 different codes on each lock! Then something bad will happen ..therefore be careful!

Bypass the SP lock
With a Nokia 16xx/21xx/31xx/51xx/81xx that are SIMlocked to one privider you can bypass the SP lock like this:
1: Insert sim card of diferent provider.
2: Turn on the phone and press the UP VOLUME key for 3 sec. then release it and the phone says PIN CODE?
3: Press the "C" key.
4: Then Press * and wait until it desapear and apear again, then press * one more time and 04*PIN*PIN*PIN#

The phone now says: PIN CODE CHANGED (or ACCEPTED) and the SIM card is accepted until you restart the phone again. NOTE: On version 5.04 Nokia has removed this option !

Fast silent mode
In the newer versions (v.7.11 or higher) a quick silent mode can by entered. Press Menu then #.

The 54# Tip:
Type 1#, 2#........54# on the keypad (when you're not in the menu) to get the phone number used for with this key when speed dialing.

CHECK SIM-LOCK

Note - If you bought your Nokia on UK Vodafone or UK Cellnet you do not need to check this because they both transmit on GSM900, and they don't lock the phones. However if you bought your phone on UK Orange or UK One2one your phone may be blocked. The reason is that they both transmitt on GSM1800. To make a call on GSM1800 you need what is known as a "Dual band" phone. A dual band phone is able to transmit on both GSM900 and GSM1800, so they lock the phones so you can't use it with any other network simcard. If you find that your phone is locked you can try different software to unlock it. (we havn't found one that works yet), or you can ask your service provider who will gladly exchange the 10 digit code for about £35.

This is how to check the status of the 4 different locks. Aslo don't try entering the wrong number, because after 3 times it will block the phone for good.

THE JAMES BOND TRICK

If you short-circuit theleft middle and right pins on the bottom of the phone with all connections touching each other, the Nokia software hangs! The profile "Headset" will be activated. Before you do this just activate the "Automatic Answer" in the headset profile and set the ringing volume to "Mute". Now you can use your phone for checking out what people are talking about in a room. Just place it under a table in a room and call it. The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen to what people are saying.

Top Nokia E70 tips

This page is for anyone thinking of migrating to the Nokia E70 with a view to using it as their main communicator, information and entertainment device.

The E70 has lots to recommend it, from the quite useable QWERTY thumb keyboard and switchable portrait/landscape screen to the very latest Symbian OS and Series 60 versions, and with multimedia and Office functionality thrown in by the bucketload.

Get up to date!
Hopefully this won't apply to you, but if your E70 is quite an early model, check its firmware (*#0000# on the standby screen) - if the top number starts with '1.' something, then you've got a very old version of the internal software and need to upgrade it. Do the usual full sync and backup of anything important on the internal disk and then pay a visit to Nokia Software Updater, which will bring your firmware up to '2.' something and bring a faster and more efficient device. Really.
Ignore those 'Exit' buttons! Usually...
You can have many of your Series 60 apps running at the same time, which means no delays while applications are launched/switched to, with the usual trick being to ignore the 'Exit' buttons. When you need to switch to a different application, press the Menu ('Applications') button and select it from there, leaving the current app running.
However: don't do this for Camera or Web or games or Java programs or sat-nav suites, any of which can hog RAM and cause your other main programs to close down. In other words, DO use Exit for these specific programs to make sure memory is freed up
Open up your device
By default, the E70 and other modern Series 60 smartphones come 'locked down' in terms of the applications they'll accept, installing only those that have large companies behind them, able to afford the expensive 'Symbian Signing' process. But there are hundreds of other great applications, many of them free, that are 'untrusted' (although under S60 3rd Edition, untrusted applications are slightly restricted in what they can do). Don't worry about this (see my malware article to put your mind at rest). Just go to 'Tools | App manager | Options | Settings' and set 'Software installation' to "All". and 'Online certif check' to "Off". You can now install any compatible program without being blocked by a spurious security warning!
Use those shortcuts!
As befits a communicator with a proper keyboard (in landscape mode), Nokia have outfitted the E70 with lots of shortcuts. Here are a few of my favourites: In any text-entry application, Ctrl-C copies highlighted text, Ctrl-X cuts it and Ctrl-V pastes it, just as in any desktop application. Ctrl-left/right moves the cursor back/forwards a word, Ctrl-up/down moves back/forwards a paragraph.
With keypad closed again now, in Gallery/Images, '3' rotates images, '*' toggles full-screen on/off, while '5' zooms in and '0' zooms out.
In Gallery/Video clips, '2' toggles full-screen playback and navigator-up fast forwards within a clip.
In Calendar, '#' moves you immediately to the current day, while '*' toggles between the different views.
Pump up the brightness
Make sure you increase the screen from the default brightness to its maximum. Yes, there's a hit on the time between battery recharges, but in the meantime you'll see some glorious colours. Go to 'Tools | Settings | Phone | Display | Light sensor' and adjust away. Of course, for night-time use, your smartphone can double as an emergency torch or, if you're actually reading from the screen, you can use the same setting to turn the brightness right down to save being dazzled.
A cleaner, brighter standby screen
You can do a lot to make your active standby screen brighter, cleaner and more useful. See my tutorial over on AllAboutSymbian. In particular, note the inclusion of Inbox/email entries. You can turn display of these on (with the latest E70 firmware) in Tools | Settings | Phone | Standby mode | Active standby mailbox).
The ones you love the most (1)
With the Nokia E70, there's S60's usual 'active' standby screen. Don't just take the shortcuts given, I'm sure you have ideas of your own as to your most used applications. You can change any of the seven shortcuts in the rather-hidden-away 'Tools | Settings | Phone | Standby mode | Active standby apps'
Messages overview
If the tiny font used in the display of each folder really annoys you as much as it does me, simply go into 'Settings>Other' and set 'Folder view' to '2 lines'. This is an Eseries perk and makes message overviews much, much clearer!
Clearing up the trash
It seems that in S60 3rd Edition, the entire install SIS files from some third party applications get stored on your internal flash disk (C:), completely unnecessarily. If you've installed several meaty games or applications, you can easily lose 10 to 20MB in this way. Use the built-in File manager to navigate into 'Installed files' and delete the SIS files, to reclaim the space. (It won't hamper removal of the applications later, don't worry)
The latest and best
Make sure you keep up to date with PC Suite. Yes, there's a version on the CD that came with your smartphone, but Nokia are fixing bugs and adding bits and pieces all the time. Most useful is the way you can explore your smartphone's folders (including your text Inbox) from within Windows Explorer. Very cool. Keep an eye on the PC Suite home page and stay current!
Go Stereo!
For some penny-pinching reason, Nokia only supply the E70 with a mono headset. Run, don't walk, to your nearest accessory online store and get one of Nokia's Pop Port stereo adaptors and you'll soon be rocking to music from your miniSD card. If you find the music too quiet, try my Equaliser hack. Also, for greater efficiency on your miniSD card, you may want to use .ogg files and OggPlay rather than the standard Music player.
Hangup = Exit
Don't keep switching back to the Standby screen using the Hangup button. This was OK on old versions of S60, but in almost every instance it closes the current application on the E70 - in other words, it acts as 'Exit'. Question: What exactly is "BitTorrent" sharing?

Answer: BitTorrent networking is the latest form of Internet P2P (peer-to-peer) file sharing. As of 2006, BitTorrent sharing is the most popular means by which web users trade software, music, movies, and digital books across the Internet. BitTorrents are very unpopular with the MPAA, the RIAA, and other copyright authorities, but are much beloved by millions of college and university students around the planet.

BitTorrents (a term synonymous with "torrents") work by downloading small bits of files from many different web sources at the same time. Torrent downloading is extremely easy to use, and outside of a few torrent search providers, torrents themselves are free of user fees.

Torrent networking debuted in 2001. A Python-language programmer, Bram Cohen, created the technology with the intent to share it with everyone. And indeed, its popularity has taken off since 2005. The torrent community is now growing exponentially in 2007. Because torrents screen out dummy and corrupt files, are free of adware/spyware, and achieve amazing download speeds, torrent popularity is growing fast. At its current rate of growth, BitTorrent networking will become the largest true P2P file-sharing community within the next year.

How are torrents special? How is the torrent community different from Kazaa or Limewire?

Answer: Like the other file-sharing networks (Kazaa, Limewire, Gnutella, eDonkey, and Shareaza) BitTorrent's primary purpose is to distribute large media files to private users. Unlike most P2P networks, however, BitTorrent stands out for 5 major reasons:

BitTorrent networking is NOT a publish-subscribe model like Kazaa; instead, BitTorrent is true Peer-Peer networking where the users do the actual file serving.

Torrents enforce 99% quality control by filtering out corrupted and dummy files, ensuring that downloads contain only what they claim to contain.

Torrents actively encourage users to share ("seed") their complete files, while punishing users who "leech".

BitTorrent can achieve download speeds over 1.5 megabits per second.

BitTorrent code is open-source, advertising-free, and adware/spyware-free. This means that no single person profits from BitTorrent's success.

Question: How exactly does BitTorrent Sharing work?

Answer: Torrent sharing is about "swarming and tracking", where users download many small bits from many different sources at once. Because this format compensates for bottleneck points, it is actually faster than downloading a large file from a single source.

"Swarming" is about splitting large files into hundreds of smaller "bits", and then sharing those bits across a "swarm" of dozens of linked users.
"Tracking" is when specific servers help swarm users find each other.
Swarm members use special Torrent client software to upload, download, and reconstruct the many file bits into complete usable files.
Special .torrent text files act as pointers during this whole process, helping users find other users to swarm with, and enforcing quality control on all shared files.

Kazaa. BitTorrent is different from the competing Kazaa network in one significant way: BitTorrent is true P2P sharing. Instead of "publisher servers" dishing out files, BitTorrent users do the file serving. Torrent users voluntarily upload their file bits to their swarm without payment or advertising revenue. You could say Torrent users are motivated, not by money, but by a "Pay-It-Forward" cooperative spirit. If you recall the Napster.com model of the 1990's, BitTorrent swarming is the same, but with sharing incentive added.

Torrent sharing goes like this: if you share files on BitTorrent, you will be rewarded with increased download speed. Conversely, if you choose to "leech" and not share your files upwards, you will be punished with slow Torrent download speeds.

Download speed is controlled by Torrent tracking servers, who monitor all swarm users. If you share, tracker servers will reward you by increasing your alotted swarm bandwidth (sometimes up to 1500 kilobits per second). Similarly, if you leech and limit your upload sharing, tracking servers will choke your download speeds, sometimes to as slow as 1 kilobit per second. Indeed, the "Pay It Forward" philosophy is digitally enforced! Leeches are not welcome in a BitTorrent swarm.

Question: How do I start using BitTorrents?

Answer: BitTorrent "swarming" requires six major ingredients.

BitTorrent client software (there are dozens of choices, all free to install. See next page for software suggestions.).
A tracker server (hundreds of them exist on the Web, no cost to use).
A .torrent text file that points to the movie/song/file you want to download.
A Torrent search engine that helps you find these .torrent text files. (See next page for Torrent search links.)
A specially-configured Internet connection with port 6881 opened on the server/router to allow Torrent file trading.
A working understanding of file management on your PC/Macintosh.

You will need to navigate hundreds of folders and filenames to make file sharing work for you.

Setup Comment: At the very worst, it will take you about one day to set up your PC or Mac for Torrent swarming. If you don't employ a hardware router or software firewall with your modem, then setup will likely take only 30 minutes of choosing and installing your Torrent client. If you do use a hardware router or firewall (which is a smart way to configure your home machine), you are likely to get "NAT" error messages at first. This is because your router/firewall has not been taught to "trust" your BitTorrent data yet. Once you open digital port 6881 on the router/firewall, the NAT messages should stop and your BitTorrent connection should work just fine. Check this page for help on setting your Internet router.

Question: What exactly are the BitTorrent download steps?

Answer, Part 1: Copyright warning. Unless you live in Canada, you must understand that copyright laws are commonly violated by P2P sharing. If you download a song, movie, or TV show, you do risk a civil lawsuit. Canadians are protected from these lawsuits because of a Canadian supreme court ruling, but not residents of the USA or most parts of Europe and Asia. This lawsuit risk is a reality, and you must accept this risk if you choose to download P2P files. Click here for more details on this copyright controversy.

Answer, Part 2: The Torrent download process goes likes this:

You use special Torrent search engines to find .torrent text files around the Net. A .torrent text file functions as a special pointer to locate a specific file and the swarm of people currently sharing that file. These .torrent files vary from 15kb to 150kb file size, and are published by serious Torrent sharers around the world.
You download the desired .torrent file to your drive (this takes about 5 seconds per .torrent file at cable modem speeds).
You open the .torrent file into your Torrent software. Usually, this is as simple as a a double-click on the .torrent file icon, and the client software auto-launches. In other cases, this software will even open the Torrent file for you.
The Torrent client software will now talk to a tracker server for 2 to 10 minutes, while it scours the Internet for people to swarm with. Specifically, the client and tracker server will search for other users who have the same exact .torrent file as you.
As the tracker locates Torrent users to swarm with, each user will be automatically labeled as either a "leech/peer" or as a "seed" (users who have only part of the target file, versus users who have the complete target file). As you might guess, the more seeds you connect to, the faster your download will be. Commonly, 10 peers/leeches and 3 seeders is a good swarm for downloading a single song/movie.
The client software then begins the transfer. As the name "sharing" implies, every transfer will happen in both directions, "down" and "up" (leech and share).
*SPEED EXPECTATION: Cable and DSL modem users can expect an average of 25 megabytes per hour, sometimes slower if the swarm is small with less than 2 seeders. On a good day with a big swarm, however, you can download a 5MB song within 3 minutes, and a 900MB movie within 60 minutes.
Once the transfer is complete, leave your Torrent client software running for at least two hours. This is called "seeding" or "good karma", where you share your complete files to other users.
Suggestion: do your downloads just before you go to sleep at night. This way, you will seed your complete files, you will increase your upload/download ratio, and you will have complete downloaded files by the time you wake up!
Movie and music plug-ins: you will likely need to install media players and updated codec converters to play your downloads:

Fair warning: you will want a second hard drive once you start serious Torrent downloading. Songs and movies require large disk space, and an average P2P user commonly has 20 to 40 GB of media files at any one time. A second 250GB hard drive is common for serious P2P users, and the recent low prices on hard drives make it a good investment.
